Altrusa raises money for Dolly Parton Library

Locals are ready to get their dance groove on to promote literacy and early reading.

The annual Altrusa Dancing with the Stars is Aug. 24 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Money raised by the event helps Altrusa sponsor the Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Edgar County that provides a free age-appropriate book every month to children registered to participate.

Books are mailed starting at birth and continue through age five so the children will have amassed a sizeable library and hopefully a love of reading by the time they enter kindergarten. Dancing with the Stars is the organization’s largest fundraiser.

Celebrities participating in the event are Kristin Chittick, Jessica Hendrickson, Barbara Kendall, Bridget Trover, Brad Tucker, Christian Landes, Dr. Aaron Rhodes and the husband and wife team of Nate and Cathy Slaven. The Slavens own En Pointe studio and have their performance piece ready to go.

Dance instructors Neil Ward and Phyllis Webster are whipping the contestants into shape for smooth moves and impressive feats on the floor. One of the competitors will take home the coveted DWTS trophy for 2019 and there is also People’s Choice Award winner.

Organizers say all dinner and dancing tickets are sold out, but tickets to watch the competition and dance afterwards are still available by contacting Sue Anne Casey on Facebook or at 217-808-1849.
