Arrest made in shooting outside Wenz School

An all-day investigation has resulted in the arrest of Tyge A. Hissem, 30, following a shooting incident behind Wenz School in Paris.

The incident did not occur on school property.

According to a release issued by the Paris Police Department shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, Hissem was arrested at approximately 6:30 p.m. and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Police also arrested Alex M. Nobel, 20, and charged him with aggravated battery, and Megan C. Irwin, 28, was taken into custody on a Champaign County warrant.

Law enforcement is not releasing details at this time of what led to the discharging of the weapon.

The timeline for development of the incident is as follows.

At approximately 11:04 a.m., Aug. 15, the Paris Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting behind Wenz School. The department immediately requested all schools go on a safety lockdown after receiving the call.

Paris Police Officers and the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department were at the location quickly and secured the scene. A short time later Illinois State Police Troop 7 and Illinois Department of Conservation Police arrived and assisted.

All area schools were dismissed at approximately 11:40 a.m. with officers and deputies present at each school until the children were safely dispersed.

Police said while this was an isolated incident, the investigation is ongoing and requested anyone with information to contact the Paris Police Department at 217-465-6351, ext. 2 and speak with either Det. Gough or Det. Jenkins.

The Paris Police Department expressed gratitude for all agencies helping with this incident. Those partners included the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police Troop 7 and Command Staff, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigation Region 4, Edgar County State’s Attorney’s Office, Clark County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Paris Cooperative High School, District 95 and District 4.
