Early morning fire marks third blaze in two days

An early morning structure fire at the corner of Wood and Sheriff Streets in Paris marked the latest development in a busy week for the Paris Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 4 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, according to Fire Chief Chad Crampton. No injuries were reported, but the building suffered extensive damage.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the Illinois State Fire Marshal is currently on the scene for a closer inspection of the premises.

Wednesday’s incident follows two other structure fires on Tuesday, March 19.

“Hopefully this is the last one,” said Crampton.

Paris Fire responded to a wood shed fire on 2200th Road and a structure fire on the 700 block of Maple Avenue, which is also under investigation.

“I don’t believe that one (Maple Avenue fire) was intentional at all,” said Crampton. “It’s just pending investigation.”

The Prairie Press will update this story as additional information becomes available.
