The Illinois State Police have confirmed a fatal accident occurred at 10:33 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, near the intersection of the East Terre Haute Road and Midwestern Gas Street.
Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett identified the deceased as Garrett T. Woltman, 24, who was a passenger in the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Barrett added the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy to be performed by Terre Haute, Ind., pathologist B. Adeagbo. The autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, July 11.
According to police, Brett A. Bell, 24, Paris, was driving a 1993 Mack Truck tractor and trailer east on the Terre Haute Road when for an unknown reason the vehicle went off the right side of the road and overturned onto the passenger side.
Bell was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters from Paris Fire Department and the Vermilion Station of the Paris Community Fire Protection District. He was transported by Horizon Health to an area hospital for what police said were non-life threatening injuries.
Woltman was also trapped by the wreckage and firefighters extricated him after Bell was out and the coroner pronounced him dead.
Police said neither Bell nor Woltman were wearing seat belts.
Bell was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, improper operation of commercial vehicle (no commercial drivers license) and failure to wear seatbelt.
Barrett said the accident remains under investigation by his office, the state police and the Edgar County Sheriff's Department.
