Just before 7 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 17, area first responders, firefighters and local enforcement were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident involving a semi-truck and an SUV at the intersection of Route 1 and 1625th Street.
“While en route, dispatch advised that extrication would be required for one of the vehicles,” Fire Chief Zack Janis later reported. “Upon arrival, crews confirmed one individual trapped in the driver’s seat of the SUV … My Fire crew successfully extricated the driver, who was then placed on a backboard and cot for medical transport. The individual was airlifted from the scene, while the driver of the semi was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.”
The driver of the second vehicle has also been reported as “seriously injured.”
The Illinois State Police arrived on the scene and took over the investigation shortly after the extrication was completed. To ensure a complete investigation, and cleanup of debris, the roadway remained closed for an extended period of time.
“I want to commend all responding personnel for their professionalism and teamwork during this incident,” Janis said. “The skill and efficiency demonstrated today highlight the extensive training and dedication of our firefighters.”
He extended an additional thought of gratitude to the Paris Community Fire Protection District and under the direction of Chief Rick Eastham, the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, Chrisman Ambulance, Horizon Health Ambulance and Medic EMS for their assistance and coordinated efforts on scene.
Further updates will be shared as they become publicly available. The names of individuals involved and the status of any injuries have not been provided at this time.
