Mayo blanks Cumberland

The Mayo Lady Redbird softball team improved to 6-2 on the season after a week in which they split a pair of games in middle school action.

On Tuesday afternoon at Casey, the Redbirds committed three errors enabling the host team to escape with a 4-1 victory. A return to their home field on Thursday brought the bats to life as the Redbirds defeated Cumberland 11-5.

 

Casey 4, Mayo 1

Casey outhit Mayo by a 6-4 margin, but the difference was the timely hitting of Casey and the costly errors by the visitors.

Peighton Smith tossed a gem of a game as she went all six innings, allowing four runs(two earned) on six hits. She walked two and struck out four in the afternoon.

Kenzi York led the offense for Mayo with a double and a single and scored the lone run for the Redbirds. Lauren Kuhn and Carlee Longest each added a single. Mayo struck out a season-high 13 times in the game.

 

Mayo 11, Cumberland 4

Things were a little different on Thursday when Cumberland came to town.

The Mayo offense was clicking on all cylinders as they collected 15 hits in their 11 run effort.

Smith earned the win for the Redbirds going four innings of one-run ball. She allowed just two hits and

struck out five. Emma Kraemer pitched the final three innings allowing four unearned runs to earn the save.

Smith was a perfect four-for-4 at the plate with a double, three singles, and three runs batted in. Chloe Thompson finished with three hits of her own, including a single, double, triple, and three RBI’s. York, Kuhn, and Kraemer each had a pair of singles with Kraemer adding two RBI’s. Alexis Landsaw added a single and a run batted in and Longest also brought home a pair of runs.

Mayo will wrap up their regular season this week as they travel to Lawrenceville on Tuesday before finishing at home on Thursday against Jasper County. All games begin at 4:30 pm with the home games being played at Roberts Field.
