Suspect in police custody after fatal beating of Paris resident

The Illinois State Police have arrested an Ohio man following a battery incident that resulted in the death of Charles K. “CK” Nay, Paris.

According to police, the attack occurred Thursday, July 20, in front of Tiger Senior Apartments where the 59-year-old Nay was a resident. Nay succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, July 22.

Tyler D. Poole, 26, of Mansfield, Ohio, is currently in custody and has been charged with first-degree murder.

The Paris Police Department was notified of a battery that occurred July 20 in the 300 block of Main Street. Nay was initially transported to Paris Community Hospital and later transferred to Carle Hospital, Urbana, where he died.

According to an ISP news release issued late Monday afternoon, July 24, the Paris Police Department requested the assistance of the ISP Division of Criminal Investigation in the matter July 21. Poole was taken into custody the same day and held at the Edgar County Jail on an initial charge of aggravated battery.

Poole was brought before Judge David W. Lewis Monday, July 24, for an initial appearance. At that time, he was charged with a Class M felony first degree murder.

Edgar County Public Defender Nathaniel Harsy was assigned to the case and bond was set at $500,000, with 10% to apply.
