An early morning accident Aug. 6 took the life of a Paris teenager and sent another to the hospital.

Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett said Brody F. Sanders, 16, a junior at Paris High School was ejected from the vehicle following the 1:33 a.m. accident in the 600 block of Court Street. Sanders was transported to the emergency room of Horizon Health Paris Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m.

Barrett listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

The other occupant of the vehicle was Briar Blair, 19, Paris, who was transported to Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind., where he was considered in stable condition later in the morning of Aug. 6.

According to Barrett, 911 dispatchers were notified of the accident at 1:33 a.m. Aug. 6. The Paris Police Department, Paris Fire Department, Horizon Health EMS and the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department all responded to the call.

The accident occurred when the eastbound 2001 Chevy Blazer occupied by the two teens failed to stop at the intersection with High Street and continued east onto Court Street when the driver lost control. The vehicle left the south side of the roadway, struck a fire hydrant and came to rest back in the roadway.

Barrett said the accident remains under investigation by his office, the Paris Police Department and the Illinois State Police.
