Edgar County woman found dead – cause unknown

Edgar County Coroner, Scott Barrett, has released details on an Edgar County woman who was found dead early Wednesday morning at her home in Hume, Illinois.

A 911 call came in at 3:12 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2023. The caller stated he tried to reach his niece for several hours. The caller said he went to her home and couldn’t get a response. After some time, he forced the front door open and entered the residence where he found the woman on the floor in the bedroom.

The Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, Hume Fire Department, and Neal Ambulance all responded to the call.


Melanie D. Berry, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.


The cause of death is pending the outcome of an autopsy and toxicology testing.
