Coach Shawn Nugent and Co. picked up where they left off before the holiday break last week, picking up dominant wins over Chrisman before opening the LEIC tournament with a pair of opening-round victories. The Redbirds will look to add an LEIC conference tournament title to their regular season title.
Mayo 70, Oblong 28
HUTSONVILLE—Mayo’s eighth-grade boys basketball team had two goals going into the opening round of Little Eastern Illinois Conference (LEIC) conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 14: stay undefeated and advance. The Redbirds did both, breezing past Oblong in a 42-point rout, 70-28.

Mayo 46, Jasper Co. 18
HUTSONVILLE—After a slow start, Mayo’s seventh-grade boys basketball squad raced out to a 46-18 win in the first round of LEIC tournament play Monday, Jan. 13.
Zion Howard led all scorers with 20 points, while Charlie Sabens followed with eight points. Gavin Helwig, Leo Smith and Justin Evard all netted four, while Ryder Adams, Jaxson Creech and Konner Whitaker chipped in two points apiece to round out the Redbirds’ scoring.
Mayo 60, Chrisman 26
CHRISMAN—After making the short trip north on State Route 1, the Mayo Redbirds got straight to business, hanging 60 points on the Chrisman-Scottland Eagles on their way to a 60-26 victory.
Charlie Yalden finished with 17 points, while Zion Howard and Jorden Guillen both reached double figures with 10. Charlie Sabens poured in nine points, Brayden Broughton tallied eight, Gavin Helwig finished with four and Brayden Douglas accounted for 2 points in the victory.
Mayo 72, Chrisman 13
CHRISMAN—Nearly every player on Mayo’s seventh-grade roster got their name in the scorebook during Thursday, Jan. 9’s matchup on the road at Chrisman. Gavin Helwig led all scorers with 14 points, while Justin Evard notched 12. Jaxson Creech had eight points, and both Ryder Adams and Zion Howard finished with six.
Phillip Williams, Leo Smith and Liem Eveland all finished with four. Keaton Cary, Charlie Sabens, Hudson Gilbert, Zayne Rogers, Brayden Douglas, Braxton Quinn and Sam Weir all contributed two points.
