Charles A. Schaich, 88, of Paris, passed away at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Paris Healthcare Center. He was retired after 30 years as a telegrapher and operator of the historic Paris A Tower block station for the New York Central and Conrail railroads. He later worked as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
A service celebrating his life is 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Templeton Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Parkinson officiating. Burial follows in Edgar Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post #211. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Schaich was born July 30, 1931, at Chicago, the son of the late Melvin and Betty Murray Schaich. He married Patricia A. Barkley July 10, 1952, at Yale, and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, Steven R. (Patti M.) Schaich of Oswego; a grandson, Brian (Melissa) Schaich of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Rae Schaich and Van Clark Schaich.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Eulalia Schaich; a son, Gary Schaich; a brother, John Schaich; and a stepsister, Marcella Anthony.
Mr. Schaich served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and attended Santa Monica City College. He was a member of First Christian Church of Paris, B.P.O. Elks #812 and American Legion Post #211.
He will be remembered as an avid lifelong railroad enthusiast who loved his career. He also enjoyed raising horses for many years.
