John Andrew Fillinger Jr., 76, of Oakland, passed away at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2021. He was retired after working many years as a police officer in Pittsburgh, Texas, and had also worked several years as a corrections officer.

A graveside service with military honors is 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at Danville National Cemetery, Danville. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Templeton Funeral Home. Current Illinois gathering restrictions limit capacity to 50 attendees.

Mr. Fillinger was born April 25, 1944, in Newton, the son of the late John Andrew and Dorothy Irene Delashmit Fillinger Sr. He married Gloria Sue Miller on Sept. 23, 1961, in South Carolina. She preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 2000.

Survivors include three children, John Andrew (Kris) Fillinger III of Paris, Shelley Sue (Rick) Linnabary of Oakland and Kim Jean (Stacy) Linnabary of Stewart, Iowa; a sister, Margaret Newman of Paris; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Jim Fillinger; three sisters, Opal VanBuren, Mabel Pinnell and Sharon Fillinger; and an infant grandson.

Mr. Fillinger was veteran of the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion Post #211. He enjoyed being on his computer and playing computer games. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren.
