Paris man dies after shooting

Posted

Paris police officers and other first responders rushed to a home on West Arthur Street Tuesday evening, June 8, after reports of a shooting.

Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett issued a statement on the coroner’s Facebook page confirming multiple calls were received at 7:33 p.m. at the 911 emergency telephone center advising a man was shot following an argument between neighbors.

Police officers arrived first and administered CPR until the Horizon Health ambulance arrived.

The police department’s daily news release for June 9 reported Zachary R. Smith, 30, 602 W.  Arthur, was taken into custody and charged with first degree murder, unlawful use of weapon and unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. Smith is currently being held at the Edgar County Jail, pending a court appearance.

The victim, Matthew M. Morgan, 31, of Paris, was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Horizon Health. His remains were later moved to Regional Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind., for an autopsy.

Following the autopsy Wednesday morning, June 9, Barrett took the next step as coroner and issued the death certificate because both the manner and cause of death were confirmed by the autopsy.

“The manner is homicide,” Barrett said in a phone call Wednesday afternoon. “The cause is a single gunshot wound to the chest.”

He added the autopsy confirmed the bullet perforated Morgan’s aorta.

The shooting remains under investigation by Barrett’s office, the Paris Police Department and Illinois State Police Zone 5 investigations.

This is a developing story, and more information will be reported as it become available.
