PARIS—After a heartbreaking loss in the final game of the Little Eastern Illinois Conference, the Mayo Redbirds found redemption on their home court, beating out the Newton Eagles 46-22 to cap off a wildly successful regular season on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Mayo’s eighth-grade team enters the postseason with a record of 18-1.
Mayo’s seventh-grade squad also netted a dominant 56-24 win to move to 17-2.
HUTSONVILLE, Ill.—All good things must come to an end — a proverb experienced firsthand by the Mayo Redbirds during the seventh and eighth-grade Little Eastern Illinois Conference tournament.
The Mayo eighth-grade team fell to Marshall 36-33 in the tournament championship, notching their first loss of the season. Charlie Yalden led the scoring for Mayo with 16 points. Zion Howard followed with six, Brayden Broughton chipped in four, while Jorden Guillen and Gavin Helwig both recorded two points.
The Redbird eighth graders are now 17-1 on the season. The seventh graders experienced the same fate, falling to Robinson Nuttall, 39-22, in their own championship game. Howard and Helwig shared scoring honors for Mayo with eight points each. Ryder Adams rounded things out with six points. The Mayo seventh graders are now 16-2 for the season.
