Thunderstorms wreak havoc, close several roads

Edgar County, alongside much of the Midwest, received its first true taste of annual summer thunderstorms on Tuesday, June 25. A large storm front swept across the area, leaving downed trees, power lines and mayhem in its wake.

Paris and Oliver Fire Departments, among other emergency units, responded to several calls Tuesday afternoon, just before 1 p.m. State Route 1 between Paris and Marshall was blocked in several spots due to downed limbs.

Several barns and buildings in the area sustained heavy damage, and one trailer was flipped over during the storm.

Other rural roads throughout the county, such as Preston Road, were laced with loose power lines knocked down by the high winds.

As of this time, both lanes of State Route 1 are clear. Crews are still working to open several other roads in the southeastern quadrant of the county.

Roads with reports of obstructions include:

  • Preston Road
  • Vermilion Road
