BROCTON—According to a press release from Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett, a man and his dog were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning on Christmas Day. The statement was released to the public around 10 a.m. on Dec. 26.
On Wednesday evening, just after 6 p.m., first responders were called to a home on East Third Street after a caller said she had been unable to reach her brother by phone all day and was worried.
She requested a wellness check.
After arriving at the home, first responders determined it was necessary to call for Barrett's assistance. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His German Shepherd dog was also found dead in the home.
The man was later identified as Brian Gibbons, age 68.
The coroner requested the Brocton Fire Department be dispatched to the scene to test for the presence of carbon monoxide. Testing of the home found the presence of fatal levels of carbon monoxide. It is unclear if the man had a carbon monoxide detector in his house.
