The city of Chrisman is preparing for a transition in leadership following the resignation of Mayor Dan Moore, effective Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
Moore announced he is stepping down from his role due to his wife’s declining health following a dementia diagnosis, as well as the personal mental health toll the position has taken on him. His departure comes after a period of continued service to the community, during which he worked alongside city council members on local initiatives.
In a brief statement, Moore expressed gratitude to those who have supported him during his tenure and voiced confidence in the city’s current leadership.
“We appreciate the ones that have supported us,” Moore said. “We got a good working council, and I hope people continue to support them.”
With the mayoral seat now vacant, the process to fill the position will fall to the Chrisman City Council. According to guidance from the Illinois Municipal League, municipalities typically have discretion in how vacancies are filled, though appointments are often made by local officials until the next election.
Moore indicated that the exact process for selecting his successor is still being determined.
“That’s up to the board to decide,” he said. “I’m not for sure—it’d be up to the board.”
Under Illinois law, municipalities may appoint an individual to fill a mayoral vacancy, with the appointee serving either until the next municipal election or for the remainder of the unexpired term, depending on timing and statutory requirements. Local officials are currently researching the appropriate steps and timeline for Chrisman.
Moore’s resignation marks a significant moment for the small Edgar County community, which will now look to its council for continuity and leadership during the transition.
Despite stepping away from office, Moore’s message to residents remained focused on unity and continued progress.
“I hope people continue to support them,” he said, referring to the city council.
Further updates on the appointment process are expected as city officials finalize their approach in the coming weeks.
