Coroner called to accident

On Saturday, Feb. 21, Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett released preliminary details on a multiple vehicle accident earlier that day at the intersection of Edgar County Roads 11 (Shiloh Road) and 8 (Horace - Brocton Road).

Barrett confirmed the accident had resulted in one fatality.

Per the coroner’s release, 911 dispatchers were notified at 4:37 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, the caller stated she had witnessed a two-vehicle accident and that emergency services were needed.

“Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, Horizon Health Ambulance, Neal EMS, Oakland Ambulance, Brocton Fire Department, Hume Fire Department, Illinois State Police, Air Evac helicopter and Air Life helicopter all responded to the scene, where it was determined to summon the coroner,” the release said.

The name of the deceased was withheld by the coroner pending notification of the extended family. The name, Michelle Vance, was released in a follow-up report on Monday, Feb. 23.

“The accident occurred when a 2012 maroon Ford Expedition, with 4 occupants, was traveling southbound on Edgar County 11 (Shiloh Road) and failed to stop at a stop sign,” the additional report said. “The Ford Expedition struck a 2019 blue Ford Escape, with a single occupant, that was traveling westbound on Edgar County 8 (Horace - Brocton Road).

The impact of the crash caused the southbound Ford Expedition to roll over and land on its roof.”

Vance, 55, of Murdock, Ill. was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Horizon Health Paris Community Hospital.

All other occupants of both vehicles were transported from the scene for medical treatment with non-life threatening injuries

At the time of this publication, the accident remains under investigation by the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department and the Edgar County Coroner.

In a separate incident, Barrett also released a report via social media on Sunday, Feb. 22.

The additional report detailed the death of a 51-year-old Paris man who was found unresponsive at the home of a friend on Sunday morning.

“A 911 call came in at 3:21 a.m. The caller stated that her friend was unresponsive and she needed help,” the report said. “The Paris Police Department, Paris Fire Department and Horizon Health Ambulance were all on the scene within minutes of the call. First responders determined the need to dispatch the coroner. Rodney G. Rodrick was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Rodrick’s cause of death is pending the outcome of toxicology testing.
