Crestwood Junior High’s drama students are ready to take audiences on a magical journey this winter with their production of Dot & the Kangaroo Jr., directed by Agnes Laughlin. Performances will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, and Saturday, Feb. 7, with curtain time at 7 p.m. both evenings.
The cast features students from Crestwood Junior High in grades sixth to eighth, showcasing the talent and enthusiasm of the school’s young performers. Tickets will be available at the door only, beginning one hour before each performance.
Based on the classic Australian children’s story by Ethel C. Pedley, Dot & the Kangaroo Jr. follows Dot, a curious young girl who becomes lost in the Australian bush and is guided home by a kind and wise Kangaroo. Along the way, she meets a colorful group of animal characters who help her discover lessons about kindness, courage and respect for the world around her. The junior version preserves the heart of the original tale while presenting it through lively music, playful characters and an easy-to-follow story that appeals to young audiences.
While the musical was unfamiliar to many of the students at the start of rehearsals, that newness quickly became part of the excitement. The cast has had a great time learning new songs and dances, embracing the show’s imaginative energy. The production lends itself especially well to the strengths of the current group of performers.
“This is a very talented bunch, with a strong female presence,” said director Agnes Laughlin. “The musical really allows them to shine.”
Laughlin describes Dot & the Kangaroo Jr. as a wonderful choice for families of all ages, featuring catchy musical numbers that audiences may find themselves singing on the way home. With its positive message, engaging music and youthful cast, the show promises to be a great night out for students and families alike.
