The Crestwood Eagle baseball team picked up three lopsided wins on the diamond this week.
The Eagles are now 5-1 on the season and will close out the August portion of their schedule at 10 a.m. today when they travel across Edgar County to face the Tri-County Titans.
After taking Monday, Sept. 2 off for Labor Day, the Eagles will host Cumberland at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and then travel to Danville Parkview at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. Crestwood will round out their week by hosting Tuscola at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.
Crestwood 15, Westville 0
WESTVILLE – Crestwood exploded for 11 runs in the first inning and then coasted to a three-inning, 15-0 win over Westville Wednesday, Aug. 28.
The Eagles pounded the Westville pitchers for 11 hits while Marcus Hutchings and Gage Englum combined to throw a no-hitter for Crestwood. In fact, only one Westville player reached base in the contest on a walk.
Crestwood wasted no time at the plate in Wednesday’s game. Englum doubled to open the contest and then scored on a line drive single by Jesse Englebright. Hutchings singled, putting runners on the corners. Will Dennis singled, scoring Englebright while Hutchings advanced to third, making the score 2-0. Hutchings scored on a fielder’s choice to make the score 3-0 Eagles with one out. Dennis advanced to third on the play.
Drake Quinn’s hard groundball was bobbled by the Westville shortstop, allowing Dennis to score and giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Quinn advanced on a passed ball and then scored on a Westville error, making the score 5-0. Mason Little reached on an error and scored on a single by Hudson Phipps, advancing Easton McNabb, who had walked, to score.
Singles by Englum, Dennis and Quinn, and a squirrely pitch that hit Englebright resulted in a score of 11-0 after the first half inning of play.
In the second inning, the big play came from Marcus Hutchings, who cleared the bases with an inside-the-park homerun to bring about the final score of 15-0.
Gage Englum and Marcus Hutchings knocked two hits, a single each as well as a double and a homer, respectively. Hutchings collected four RBIs. Will Dennis went two for two at the plate, both singles. Jesse Englebright, Wesley Burns, Drake Quinn, Easton McNabb and Hudson Phipps each collected a single.
Crestwood 15, Pal,Hut 0
The Eagles rolled to a 15-0 lead against Palestine/Hutsonville at home Monday, Aug. 26.
Gage Englum was the big stick for Crestwood in the game, driving in four runs on four hits – including two doubles.
Crestwood led 6-0 at the end of the second inning, then put a nine-spot on the scoreboard in the third to give them a win at the end of three innings.
Marcus Hutchings and Gage Englum combined for a no-hitter over three innings. Together they allowed no runs on no hits while walking one and striking out nine.
Besides Englum’s offense, Mason Little had three hits including a double and two singles while Hutchison collected two hits, including a double. Will Dennis, Drake Quinn, Easton McNabb and Hudson Phipps each added a single.
Crestwood 15, Marshall 3
MARSHALL – An eight-run fifth inning lifted the Eagles over Marshall on Friday, Aug. 24.
Crestwood never trailed in the game, scoring two runs in the first, three runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and then eight runs in the fifth and final inning.
Will Dennis picked up five RBIs in the game with two singles. Gage Englum, Jesse Englebright and Marcus Hutchings also knocked two hits with one of Hutchings’ being a triple. Ethan Brewer, Drake Quinn and Easton McNabb each singled once.
Drake Quinn started on the mound for Crestwood, allowing three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Easton Brewer finished out the game allowing no runs on no hits while striking out six.
