Free alarms, bed shakers for Kansas

KANSAS — Residents within the Kansas Fire Protection District have an opportunity to improve home safety through a free Smoke Alarm and Bed Shaker Program being offered by the Kansas Fire Department in 2026.

The program provides free smoke alarms and bed shakers to qualifying residents who live within the fire protection district. Bed shakers are designed specifically to alert individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in the event of a fire, offering a critical layer of protection while sleeping.

According to the department, there is no cost to participants. Fire department personnel will come directly to the home to install the equipment. The smoke alarms provided through the program feature 10-year batteries, reducing the need for frequent replacements, while the bed shakers plug into an outlet and include a backup battery for added reliability.

Fire officials say the program is part of an ongoing effort to ensure all residents, especially those with hearing impairments, have access to lifesaving fire safety equipment.

Anyone interested in participating or learning more about the program is encouraged to contact a member of the Kansas Fire Department or call 217-948-5111.

“We are here to protect and serve our community,” the department stated.
