The 11th annual “Back to School Bang” was held on Friday, Aug. 1, at Horizon Health. The high-energy gathering brought families, students and community partners together to kick off the new school year on a positive note.

Held on the hospital’s campus and open to the public, the free event featured a variety of school supplies, touch-a-truck activities, community vendors and plenty of fun. Students of all ages left with backpacks full of essentials and smiles on their faces.

According to event organizers and participants, the afternoon wasn’t just about pencils and paper—it was powered by the heart of the community.

Businesses, organizations and volunteers showed up in full force to help welcome students into a new school year. From local vendors bringing in heavy equipment, to law enforcement showing up with squad cars, individuals and groups also took time to set up stands and create activities. Even pageant queens and cheerleaders volunteered to bead bracelets and paint faces, ensuring that every child had a memorable experience and felt both seen and supported.

Unlike other, traditional events held at the hospital, the Back to School Bang is entirely employee-driven, funded and sponsored, Samantha McCarty, director of Horizon Health Emergency Services, shared.

From stuffing 500 backpacks with school supplies, to creating multiple, interactive supply stations and booths, the hospital's staff said they are dedicated to creating a memorable evening.

“I’m proud to work for a place so dedicated to giving back to the community,” McCarty said.
