The Edgar County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement regarding a hit-and-run incident on East 1200th Road in Paris on Friday, April 18.
“From the initiation of the investigation on April 12, 2025, the Edgar County Sheriff’s Office has reviewed evidence, followed leads, interviewed witnesses and coordinated with other departments and offices to develop a suspect,” the press release said. “At this time, a request for a warrant has been submitted to the Edgar County State’s Attorney’s Office for the arrest of a suspect in connection to this investigation.”
Additional information will be released as the case develops, per the office.
“The Edgar County Sheriff’s Office wants to thank the Illinois State Police, Edgar County Coroner’s Office, Edgar County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the Paris Fire Department, the Paris Police Department and all members of the public for their assistance in this investigation,” the release said. “The Edgar County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work diligently to protect and serve the citizens of Edgar County.”
In a press release issued by Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett on Sunday, April 13, the public was informed that 34-year-old Dakota Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Evidence at the scene shows that Mr. Gibson was walking west on East 1200th Road, approximately one mile east of Illinois Route 1, when a vehicle struck him from behind. The vehicle left the scene,” the coroner’s press release said.
The public is reminded that all people arrested, or otherwise charged, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
