A press release from the Paris Police Department announced the official arrest of an 18-year-old man in connection with a stabbing that occurred in Paris on Dec. 28.

The release shared that officers were dispatched to the 500 block of West End Avenue around noon Sunday in response to a reported domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers located a 51-year-old man who reported that he had been stabbed multiple times. Officers immediately began rendering first aid and requested medical assistance from Horizon Health Ambulance.

Following an investigation, officers arrested Mason W. Ross. The victim later identified Ross as a temporary resident of the home where the incident occurred.

Ross was initially booked into the Edgar County Jail on a preliminary charge of aggravated domestic battery. Court records indicate additional charges have since been filed, including attempted murder with a strong probability of death or great bodily harm, a Class X felony; aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony; aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, a Class 3 felony; and domestic battery involving physical contact, a Class A misdemeanor.

Ross made his first court appearance at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, during which Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren McQueen filed a petition to detain Ross. The request for detainment was not debated by Ross’ defense, Attorney Rich Kash.

The court found that no conditions of release could mitigate what it described as a “real and present threat” to both the victim and the community.  A motion from the state for fingerprinting and DNA was also granted without objection.

Ross was remanded to the custody of the Edgar County Sheriff’s Office. He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 26.
