When Atlanta celebrity makeup artist Justin Douglas found himself struggling with dental pain and unable to find affordable treatment options close to home, he traveled to a free healthcare clinic nearly 500 miles away in Paris, Ill.
After discovering the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic through social media, Douglas made the eight-hour drive to Edgar County to receive dental care he said he desperately needed.
“I was in so much pain,” Douglas said. “I was looking all around, and I couldn’t find anywhere else to go. Literally last minute, I searched on TikTok, found it and took that drive.”
Douglas’ journey highlights both the growing reach of the RAM Clinic and the ongoing challenges many Americans face when seeking affordable healthcare services, even outside traditional underserved populations. The RAM Clinic offers free medical, dental and vision services.
After arriving in Paris, Douglas received dental treatment that included three fillings and a cleaning. The relief was immediate; he said the pain had become increasingly difficult to manage before making the trip, and admitted he arrived at the clinic feeling nervous about the experience.
“I was filled with anxiety, but I was ready to get it all done,” he said.
That restlessness quickly faded as he interacted with clinic volunteers and providers. One volunteer dentist left a particularly strong impression.
“He was just the nicest guy,” Douglas said. “He said he spent 45 years in dental practice, and now he does this for fun and enjoyment, giving services to people.”
The compassion shown by volunteers is one of the reasons RAM clinics have earned a positive reputation among patients nationwide. Many of the providers donate their time and expertise to ensure patients can receive care at no cost.
For Douglas, the experience also challenged assumptions about who needs assistance accessing healthcare.
For the past decade, he has worked in the beauty and entertainment industry, including on reality television productions, movie sets and with high-profile clients. While many people assume those careers come with financial security, Douglas said the reality is often much different.
“I think it’s a misconception that people in the industry make tons of money and can afford it all, but that’s not the case,” he said.
Although his work has brought visibility and professional success, Douglas said appearances can be deceiving.
“I may have accumulated a lot of popularity, but it doesn’t equate to money,” he said. “People like to look at me as this big person, but that’s just not the case.”
His story reflects a broader issue facing many Americans who find themselves caught between rising healthcare costs and limited access to affordable services.
“I would say it’s important because a lot of people can’t afford medical insurance or health insurance or vision or dental,” Douglas said. “There are a lot of people out here that need these benefits.”
Douglas believes programs such as RAM fill a critical gap by providing services that many patients might otherwise postpone or forgo altogether.
The timing of his visit proved especially meaningful. Shortly after receiving treatment, Douglas traveled to film his first movie role.
“I got the cleaning and the filling done just in time for my very first movie role,” he said.
Douglas said the project involves members of the Braxton family, longtime clients he has worked with.
Despite spending only a short time in Paris before beginning the long drive home, Douglas said he came away with a positive impression of the community.
“As I drove through, I knew it was a small town,” he said. “From what I saw, it looked pleasant. Everyone was really inviting.”
For Douglas, the clinic represented far more than a dental appointment. It provided relief from pain, access to care he struggled to find elsewhere and a reminder that help can sometimes come from unexpected places.
“It was worth the eight hours,” he said.
