The release of a toxicology report on Tuesday, July 30 by Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett is shedding light on a fatal June 27 car accident.

Authorities responded to reports of a catastrophic collision at the intersection of State Route 1 and 1400 North just after 8:30 p.m. The crash resulted in the death of Oakwood resident Shane D. Hughes. Per early evidence and eyewitness accounts, Hughes crossed the center line while traveling north in his white 2003 Chevy Silverado, striking a southbound grey 2023 Hyundai Palisade SUV, which was overturned and left the roadway.

“Hughes was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene,” Barrett’s press release explained.

Hughes’ passenger was transported to Union Hospital and was later discharged. The driver of the second vehicle declined treatment at the scene.

According to the recently released toxicology report, “Hughes was under the influence of methamphetamine, fentanyl, morphine and tapentadol at the time of the accident.”

The collision was the second of two recent accidents on State Route 1 resulting from the use of controlled substances.
