Paris youth are bolting for a cause

PARIS—Legacy Student Ministries, the youth department at Paris First Baptist Church is preparing to host its first-ever 5K and one-mile fundraiser. Scheduled for Oct. 12, the race has been labeled “The Burrito Bolt” because each runner will receive a burrito once they cross the finish line, according to Jeffery Bennett.

Bennett and other youth group leaders have been planning the event since the Spring of 2024.

“We started throwing around fundraiser ideas because our old ones just weren’t working… the idea of a 5K just kind of stuck and the burrito thing, it was just too fun to pass up,” he said. “I love doing 5K’s, it’s kind of my thing, so I was asked to help organize it.”

Competitors who enter the Burrito Bolt have the unique option to participate in one of two options, the “One Mile Appetizer” or “The 5K Main Dish.” The cost to enter is $30 and registration will remain open until the race starts.

Funds raised from the entry fee will go directly to the youth group’s general fund, as well as helping with community outreach, teens in need, church camp trips and a yearly mission trip.

The 5K run begins at 8 a.m., and the one-mile sprint will start at 7:30 a.m. Both races start at the church, located at 201 S. Central Ave. in Paris.

The race route includes a jaunt down Jefferson Street and a turn on Court Street, eventually looping back to the church.

In addition to receiving a race t-shirt and a burrito from Los Tres, Bennett also shared that awards will be presented to top males and females overall, and medals to top three in each age division.

Age Divisions include seniors 50 and over, 37-49, 26- 35, 15- 25 and runners 14 and under.

“I think it will be a really fun time, and of course, its for a good cause,” Bennett said.
